  • The Reader
On a lazy afternoon, the sound of birds chirping outside created a peaceful atmosphere in the garden. Gabe found a shady spot under a large tree, a cool glass of lemonade in hand, refreshing and tangy. He opened his tablet to the Mindmyst Tales Blog, eager to explore the latest stories. A small notebook and pencil rested on his lap, ready for him to jot down any thoughts that inspired him. As he read, the combination of nature and storytelling made him feel completely at ease.

 • Game of the Week --- your chance to win a prize ...

The Campsite Canopy

At the campsite, a group of friends sets up a triangular canopy using three poles. The base of the triangle is 10 feet, and the height from the base to the top pole is 8 feet. What is the area of the canopy that provides shade for their picnic?

Cheese and Crackers: Pack some cheese and your favorite crackers for a simple and satisfying snack. You can also add some summer sausage or salami for extra flavor.

Popcorn: Bring along some popcorn kernels and pop them over the campfire in a cast-iron skillet or a popcorn popper.

 • Now, this week's exciting story.

The Christmas Tree Hunt
by Joe Miller

Jack had been planning this surprise for weeks. As he pulled up to Emily’s house in his trusty green Ford Mustang, he could feel the excitement bubbling inside him. The sun was just beginning to set, casting a golden hue over the neighborhood, and the crisp winter air was filled with the promise of snow. He hopped out of the car, a grin plastered on his face, and knocked on the door.

When Emily opened it, her eyes widened in surprise. “Jack! What are you doing here? I thought we were just going to binge-watch holiday movies tonight!”

“Change of plans!” he declared, his voice full of playful enthusiasm. “We’re going to a Christmas tree farm! The scent of pine is calling us!” He gestured dramatically, as if he were unveiling a grand adventure.

“Christmas tree farm? You mean the place where I’ll get to judge the trees like I’m a judge on a reality competition show?” she teased, raising an eyebrow.

“Exactly! And I’m betting you’ll be the harshest critic of all,” he replied, winking. “Now grab your coat; we’ve got a tree to find!”

As they drove to the farm, the scent of fresh pine wafted through the open windows, mingling with the crispness of the winter air. Jack couldn’t help but steal glances at Emily as she hummed along to the holiday tunes playing on the radio. Her cheeks were rosy from the cold, and her laughter was like music to his ears.

Upon arriving at the farm, they were greeted by rows and rows of towering Christmas trees, each one adorned with a sprinkling of snow. “Look at them!” Jack exclaimed, pointing toward a particularly fluffy tree. “That one looks like it just walked out of a Christmas card!”

Emily giggled, shaking her head. “That tree is way too much like a poodle. I’m looking for something more… majestic.”

“Majestic? You mean like me?” Jack quipped, puffing out his chest as he tried to strike a heroic pose.

“More like a lumberjack, less like a peacock,” she shot back, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

They wandered through the rows, playfully debating the merits of each tree. Jack would point at a scraggly one and say, “This one has character!” while Emily would roll her eyes and reply, “Character? More like it’s auditioning for the role of ‘sad tree’ in a holiday movie.”

After what felt like a comedic eternity, Jack suddenly spotted it—a perfectly symmetrical tree standing proudly among its peers. “Emily! Look! This is the one!” he shouted, his voice echoing through the farm.

“It’s beautiful!” she exclaimed, her eyes wide with delight. “I can’t believe you found it!”

With determination, they worked together to cut it down, the saw squeaking as they wrestled with the trunk. “I didn’t know tree cutting required so much teamwork!” Jack puffed, trying to catch his breath.

“Just think of it as a workout—one that involves pine needles and holiday spirit!” Emily laughed, her cheeks flushed from the chilly air and their exertion.

Once the tree was down, they struggled to get it onto the roof of Jack’s Mustang. “I feel like we’re trying to fit an elephant in a Mini Cooper!” he grunted, adjusting the tree as it wobbled precariously.

“Just don’t let it fall off! I don’t want to be responsible for ‘tree spills’ on the highway,” Emily teased, holding onto the trunk like it was a life raft.

Finally, they secured the tree and hopped back into the car, giggling at their ridiculousness. The drive back to Emily’s house was filled with laughter and playful banter about their tree-finding adventure.

Once home, they set the tree up in Emily’s living room, and the scent of pine enveloped them like a warm hug. “This is the part where we decorate and share embarrassing holiday stories, right?” Jack asked, plucking a shiny ornament from the box.

“Absolutely! Prepare to be dazzled by my tales of Christmas past!” Emily replied, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

As they adorned the tree with lights and ornaments, they shared stories of their childhood Christmases. Jack recounted the time his younger brother tried to climb the tree to retrieve a star and ended up tangled in the lights. Emily laughed so hard she nearly dropped an ornament.

“Okay, your turn!” she said, handing him a delicate glass ornament. “What’s your most embarrassing Christmas moment?”

“Um, well, there was that one year I wore matching pajamas with my family. I felt like a walking holiday card,” he admitted, a sheepish grin on his face.

As the last ornament was hung, the lights twinkled to life, casting a warm glow throughout the room. Jack pulled Emily close, wrapping his arms around her waist. “You know, I love this time spent together,” he whispered, his breath warm against her ear.

Just then, they noticed a sprig of mistletoe hanging above them. Jack smirked and said, “Well, I guess we have to kiss now.”

“Guess so!” Emily replied, her heart racing as Jack leaned in. Their lips met softly, the warmth of the moment sending a rush of joy through them both.

After the kiss, they settled onto the couch, snuggled up under a cozy blanket, sipping eggnog and watching holiday movies. The laughter and warmth of the evening wrapped around them like a festive embrace, and Emily couldn’t help but think that this was the perfect start to the holiday season.
