• Across my Desk
What if aliens weren't coming to earth but rather leaving like rats from a sinking ship. Which is scarier?
Back in my day, the first snowfall was like winning the lottery—except instead of cash, you got a day off school! We’d wake up to see the world blanketed in white and immediately start plotting how to convince our parents that we needed a snow day. Of course, we didn’t have fancy weather apps; we just relied on the neighborhood kids yelling, "No school!" as if they were announcing a royal decree. Ah, the good old days when our biggest dilemma was whether to build a snowman or have a snowball fight—while dodging the neighbor's dog, of course!

• The Reader
It was a chilly winter evening, and the snow fell softly outside, creating a serene landscape. Bonnie wrapped herself in a thick blanket on the couch, a cup of hot cocoa warming her hands. She opened her laptop to the Mindmyst Tales Blog, excited to dive into new adventures. A plate of peppermint bark sat nearby, its festive flavor adding to the cozy atmosphere. With each story she read, she felt the warmth of the cocoa and the magic of the tales envelop her.

The Autumn Drink Mixer
A cool drink recipe requires mixing three types of juices: apple, cranberry, and orange. If you want to make a total of 24 ounces of juice and decide to use twice as much apple juice as cranberry juice and three times as much orange juice as cranberry juice, how many ounces of each juice will you need?

The Case of the Missing Ornament
by Joe Miller
It was a crisp December afternoon when Jack and Emily decided it was time to find the perfect ornament for their Christmas tree. The local holiday market was bustling with families, laughter, and the delightful scent of cinnamon wafting through the air. Armed with a shopping list that included “one perfect ornament” and “hot cocoa,” they set off on their quest.
As they navigated through the maze of stalls, they came across an eccentric little shop tucked away in the corner. The sign above the door read, “Oddities and Ornaments,” and the window was filled with the most peculiar decorations imaginable. There were glittering unicorns, singing snowmen, and even a life-sized Santa dressed as a pirate. But one ornament stood out above the rest: a bright green pickle, complete with googly eyes and a mischievous grin.
“Is that a pickle?” Emily asked, her eyebrows raised in disbelief.
“Looks like it,” Jack replied, snickering. “I can’t believe someone actually made a pickle ornament. What’s next, a broccoli one?”
Just as Emily reached for the pickle, a mysterious old lady appeared out of nowhere, her silver hair glowing like a Christmas star. She swooped in and snatched the pickle ornament away, cackling with delight. “You don’t understand, dear! This is the pickle fortune! The true spirit of Christmas lies within!”
Emily blinked, taken aback. “The pickle fortune? What does that even mean?”
“Legend has it,” the old lady continued, her eyes twinkling with mischief, “that whoever possesses the pickle ornament will receive good luck and an abundance of holiday cheer!”
Jack and Emily exchanged skeptical glances. “We need to get that pickle,” Jack said, already formulating a plan. “If it’s as magical as she says, it could be the key to the best Christmas ever!”
“Right! But how do we get it back?” Emily asked, trying to suppress her laughter at the absurdity of the situation.
“Simple,” Jack replied with a grin. “We follow her!”
With nothing but their shopping list and a questionable plan, Jack and Emily set off in pursuit of the old lady, who was already waddling away, clutching the pickle ornament like a prized treasure. They ducked behind displays of holiday lights and sneaked past a group of carolers, trying to remain unseen.
The old lady led them through the market, down a narrow alley, and into a quaint little cottage that looked like it had jumped straight out of a holiday postcard. Colorful lights twinkled on the eaves, and the faint sound of laughter and music floated through the air.
“What now?” Emily asked, peering through the window.
“Let’s see what’s going on in there!” Jack whispered, excitement bubbling within him.
They crept around to the back of the cottage and found an open door. Peeking inside, they were met with a sight that left them speechless: an extravagant holiday party was in full swing, complete with dancing gingerbread men, a DJ dressed as Santa, and a buffet table overflowing with festive treats.
In the center of the room, the old lady was leading a conga line of guests, pickle ornament held high above her head like a trophy. “Join the pickle party!” she shouted, her laughter ringing out like jingle bells.
Jack and Emily exchanged incredulous looks before bursting into laughter. “This is the most bizarre holiday party I’ve ever seen!” Emily exclaimed.
“Let’s join in!” Jack said, already stepping into the room.
With a shared sense of adventure, they dashed in, weaving through the dancing guests, and soon found themselves swept up in the conga line. They danced and laughed, the pickle fortune becoming the highlight of the evening.
As the night went on, they indulged in delicious treats, including pickle-flavored cupcakes (which were surprisingly good) and eggnog that tasted like it had been spiked with holiday cheer. They even learned the pickle dance, a ridiculous routine that had everyone in stitches.
Finally, as the party began to wind down, the old lady approached them, her eyes twinkling. “You two have the spirit of the pickle! The true magic of Christmas is not just in the ornament, but in the joy and laughter you bring to others.”
Jack and Emily smiled, realizing that their quest for the perfect ornament had turned into an unforgettable adventure filled with friendship and laughter. The pickle ornament may have been just a silly decoration, but it symbolized something much greater—the joy of the season and the memories they had created together.
As they left the cottage, they agreed that the pickle would indeed be the perfect ornament for their tree. After all, it had led them to the most bizarre and delightful holiday party of the season, and they couldn’t wait to share the story with everyone they knew.
