  • The Reader
In the cozy kitchen nook, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the scent of cinnamon rolls just out of the oven. Sean leaned back in his chair, savoring the warmth of his mug as he navigated to Mindmyst Tales Blog on his tablet. The late afternoon sun streamed in through the window, illuminating his workspace with a warm glow. He pulled out a notepad and a pencil, ready to jot down ideas that sparked from the enchanting stories. With each sip of coffee and bite of cinnamon roll, he felt his creativity flow. The blog's captivating narratives wrapped around him like a comforting embrace. Sean smiled, knowing he was in for a productive afternoon.

Building Snowmen: A family decides to build snowmen in their yard. They have enough snow to make 5 snowmen, and each snowman requires 3 large snowballs, 2 medium snowballs, and 1 small snowball. If they have 20 large snowballs, 12 medium snowballs, and 5 small snowballs, can they build all 5 snowmen? If not, how many more small snowballs do they need?

 • Now, This Week's Exciting Story

The Challenge
by Joe Miller

It was a glorious winter morning in Southington, Connecticut, and the world outside was transformed into a breathtaking wonderland of white. Jack Dark, fueled by the excitement of a fresh snowfall, burst through the door of their cozy home, bundled up like a walking marshmallow. “Emily!” he called, his voice muffled by the layers of clothing. “It’s the perfect day for a snowball fight!”

Emily Harper, who had just settled in with a warm cup of cocoa, raised an eyebrow from her spot by the window. “A snowball fight? You’re on!” she laughed, setting her drink aside. She grabbed her coat and boots, ready to take on the challenge. Little did Jack know, Emily had been practicing her snowball-making skills all winter, and she was more than prepared for this showdown.

As they stepped outside, Jack dramatically pointed to the vast expanse of untouched snow. “This is my battlefield! Prepare to be defeated!” he declared, puffing out his chest like a heroic knight ready for battle. Emily smirked, already eyeing the perfect snowbank for cover. “You’re going down, brave knight!” she teased, quickly ducking behind her snowy fortress.

With a determined gleam in his eye, Jack scooped up a handful of snow, packing it tightly into a ball. He aimed carefully, squinting through the bright sunlight reflecting off the snow. “You call that a snowball?” Emily laughed, watching him intently. “More like a snow pebble!” Jack, undeterred, fired the snowball with all his might, but it sailed harmlessly over her head, landing in a soft thud far behind her.

“I was just testing the wind conditions!” he shot back, grinning as he began to gather more snow for another attempt. Emily couldn’t contain her laughter. “Sure, let’s go with that! Just make sure you don’t hit anything too valuable, like your pride!” Jack rolled his eyes and began to pile up snowballs, determined to get one right this time.

After a few more missed attempts, Jack finally managed to pack a perfect snowball. He aimed, took a deep breath, and launched it with all his might. It soared through the air, hitting Emily squarely in the chest. “Direct hit!” he shouted triumphantly, pumping his fist in the air. Emily stood there, stunned for a moment, before bursting into laughter. “Okay, okay, you got me! But now it’s my turn!”

With a playful glint in her eye, Emily sprang into action, scooping up snow and forming a barrage of snowballs in record time. She popped up from behind her snowbank and launched them like a snowball cannon. Jack barely had time to react as one hit him right in the face, sending him stumbling backward into a pile of snow. “Oh no! The brave knight has fallen!” she teased, doubling over with laughter at the sight of him, half-buried in snow.

As the snowball fight raged on, the two of them became lost in a flurry of laughter and snow. They ducked and dodged, retaliating with snowballs and playful banter, turning their snowy backyard into a battlefield of joy. Finally, breathless and victorious, they collapsed in a heap, surrounded by a mountain of snow, their cheeks rosy and hearts full. “You know,” Jack said, still chuckling, “I think we both won today.” Emily smiled, her eyes sparkling with happiness. “Agreed! But next time, I’m definitely going to take you down!”

As they lay in the snow, panting and laughing, Emily Harper’s vibrant red scarf stood out against the white backdrop, framing her face beautifully. Her cheeks were flushed a rosy pink from the cold and the excitement of their snowball battle, and her dark hair was pulled back into a messy bun, with a few rebellious strands framing her face. She wore a cozy navy blue coat that hugged her figure, and her snow boots peeked out from under her thick, insulated pants. Every time she laughed, the sound was like music to Jack's ears, a melody that danced with the wind around them.

“Okay, but seriously, what’s the deal with yellow snow?” Jack said, trying to catch his breath as he propped himself up on one elbow. “Is it just a sign that someone couldn’t hold it in? Or is it a new flavor of snow cone?” Emily giggled, shaking her head. “I heard it’s just nature’s way of reminding us that some things are best left untested, like snow that looks suspiciously like lemonade!”

She playfully pointed at a patch of yellow snow nearby. “I mean, if you ever see yellow snow, it’s a clear warning: Don’t eat the snow, or you might just end up with a very different kind of flavor explosion!” Jack chuckled, nodding in agreement. “Right? I’d rather stick to the classic flavors—like vanilla or chocolate—rather than whatever that is!” He gestured dramatically at the offending patch of yellow, feigning horror. “Imagine the marketing campaign: ‘Try our new yellow snow flavor! Guaranteed to give you an unforgettable experience!’”

Emily laughed so hard that a few snowflakes landed on her nose, making her look even more adorable. “You know, I think I’d rather have a snowball fight with the yellow snow than actually eat it,” she said, a mischievous spark lighting her eyes. “At least then, I can throw it at you and claim it’s a ‘special edition’ snowball!” Jack feigned shock, clutching his chest. “You wouldn’t dare! I’d have to sue you for emotional damages!”

As they rolled around in the snow, Jack’s laughter mixed with Emily’s, creating a symphony of joy that filled the crisp winter air. “You know what they say—when life gives you yellow snow, just make lemonade!” he joked, pretending to pour an imaginary pitcher. Emily burst into laughter, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “Or you could just build a snowman and give him a yellow hat! Instant fashion statement!”

“Now that’s a snowman I’d like to see!” Jack replied, shaking his head in amusement. “We could name him ‘Lemonade Larry’ and make him the mascot of our snow adventures!” Emily giggled, picturing the ridiculous snowman with a bright yellow hat perched atop his head. “And we can have a sign next to him that says, ‘Caution: This snowman is not for tasting!’”

As the sun began to dip lower in the sky, casting a golden hue over the snow, Emily and Jack finally decided to call a truce. They sat up, brushing snow off their coats and catching their breath. “You know,” Emily said, her voice softening, “this has been the best snow day ever. Just you, me, and a questionable amount of yellow snow.” Jack smiled, his heart warmed by the moment. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything, especially not for a yellow snow cone!”

With the laughter still lingering in the air, they made their way back inside, hands intertwined, ready to warm up with hot chocolate and share more jokes about their snowy adventure. The day had been a perfect blend of fun, laughter, and just the right amount of silliness, and as they stepped into the warmth of their home, they knew this was just the beginning of many more winter escapades to come.
