Miller's Mysteries Blog
Greetings and Welcome!
Greetings and welcome to Miller’s Mysteries Blog, where the early spring air in Southington, Connecticut, is just warm enough to convince us winter is finally loosening its grip. The robins are back, the roads are drying out, and somebody down the street has already attempted the year’s first ambitious backyard cleanup. Two of the neighbor’s goats have wandered over again and are staring curiously through the fence like unpaid editors reviewing my work. Meanwhile, the cats sit in the window, tails twitching, studying the goats as if they’re planning a documentary. Pull up a chair, grab a hot coffee, and welcome to another day of mysteries.

• The Reader
Amanda stretches out on a picnic blanket in the park at noon, sun warm and soft on her shoulders. She has a latte in a paper cup with her name misspelled on it. Her notebook flutters slightly in the breeze, pencil resting across the lines.
She scrolls Mindmyst Tales on her phone, brushing her hair back when the wind tries to play with it. Kids shout in the distance, kicking leaves through the air. The scene is alive and bright. Amanda starts writing, excitement building with every paragraph she reads.
• Math of the Week
1. Mustang Mileage Problem
Detective Jack Dark takes his forest-green Mustang for a short drive around Southington to buy decorations for Saint Patrick's Day. The round trip from his house to the store and back is 18 miles. His Mustang averages 24 miles per gallon of gasoline. How many gallons of gas does Jack use for the trip?
2. Cleaning the Backyard Shed (Area Problem)
Emily helps Jack clean out the woodworking shed behind the house so they can build a small shelf for holiday decorations. The shed floor measures 10 feet long and 8 feet wide. They plan to sweep the entire floor before setting up the workbench. What is the total area of the shed floor in square feet?
3. Wooden Shelf Board Length (Algebra Problem)
Jack wants to build a simple three-board shelf to hold green candles and small decorations for Saint Patrick's Day. Each board must be the same length, and together the three boards will use 18 feet of wood. If
x represents the length of one board. What equation represents the situation, and how long is each board?
4. Early Spring Wildflower Counting (Ratio Problem)
While walking near the backyard fence, Emily admires some early spring wildflowers beginning to bloom. She counts 6 purple crocuses and 9 yellow ones growing near the shed. What is the ratio of purple flowers to yellow flowers, and what fraction of the flowers are purple?
5. Mustang Travel Time (Speed Problem)
After finishing the shed cleanup, Jack and Emily take the Mustang for a quick 30-mile drive through the countryside outside Southington, Connecticut, to admire early spring scenery. If Jack drives at an average speed of 40 miles per hour, how long will the trip take in hours?
• Now, This Week's Exciting Story
St. Patrick’s Day Chili Cook-off
The festive banners of Saint Patrick's Day flutter across the town green in Southington, Connecticut as neighbors gather for the annual chili cookoff. A cool breeze carries the rich smell of simmering beans, peppers, and spices drifting from a long row of bubbling crockpots. Jack stands proudly behind his pot, insisting his secret ingredient is “a touch of luck and a dash of courage.” Emily folds her arms and grins, whispering to the judges that the real secret might be three heroic scoops of garlic. Laughter spreads through the crowd while curious tasters line up with little paper bowls. The judges huddle together over their clipboards, thoughtfully sampling each entry with exaggerated seriousness. After a long pause, they announce the official scientific conclusion—every sample requires at least two more squares of cornbread for proper evaluation. 🍀🌶️
The laughter around the cookoff tables grows louder as Jack lifts the lid of his crockpot with theatrical flair. A cloud of fragrant steam rolls out, making several spectators lean closer with curiosity. “Careful,” Jack says, wagging the ladle, “this chili may cause sudden dancing and a strong belief in lucky clovers.” Emily sniffs the air dramatically and waves her hand in front of her face. “That’s not luck,” she says, grinning, “that’s garlic staging a full-scale parade.”
One of the judges dips a spoon into Jack’s pot and raises an eyebrow. “Hmm,” he says slowly, “this one has… personality.” Jack beams proudly and taps the side of the crockpot like it’s a prized trophy. Emily leans toward the judge and whispers loudly enough for everyone to hear. “Translation: bring a fire extinguisher and maybe a loaf of bread.” The nearby crowd bursts into chuckles.
A man at the next table shakes his head and points toward Jack’s chili. “If that’s the lucky version, I’d hate to taste the unlucky one.” Jack laughs and gestures toward Emily. “Hey, my assistant here helped supervise the garlic distribution.” Emily pretends to gasp in mock outrage. “Supervise? I tried to stop you after the second shovel.”
The judges gather again with their clipboards while the crowd watches like it’s the final inning of a ballgame. One judge clears his throat and speaks in an official tone. “After careful tasting and several emergency bites of cornbread…” The other judge nods solemnly. “…we have determined that Jack’s chili is both powerful and memorable.” Emily claps politely and adds, “Yes, memorable like a campfire that refuses to go out.”
Jack lifts his spoon like a victory flag while the crowd applauds and laughs. “You hear that?” he says proudly. “Memorable!” Emily shakes her head with a smile and reaches for another square of cornbread. “That’s right,” she says, “because anyone who survives that chili will be telling the story for years.” The breeze drifts through the square again, carrying laughter, music, and the unmistakable scent of garlic-filled victory. 🌶️🍀
===========SHADOW
A neighbor screamed across the street, but her mouth moved without sound.
He froze as a saucer-shaped shadow glided past the window, bending the moonlight.
Suddenly, he realized the scream had come from inside his own chest.
The book hinted: not every encounter is witnessed—some are inherited.
