Chris caught fish at a steady rate of 3 fish per hour. Trish started slowly but caught 5 fish per hour after the first hour. After 4 hours, they had caught a total of 26 fish.

Question: Assuming Chris fished for all 4 hours at a constant rate, how many fish did Trish catch?

2. Quadratic Equations – The Long Cast Contest

"I bet my cast goes farther than yours," Chris teased.

Trish smiled. "Distance isn't everything. Accuracy catches fish."

Chris cast his lure so that its height above the water followed the equation

h = -0.2x² + 2.4x + 1

where h is the height in feet and x is the horizontal distance in feet.

Question: At what horizontal distance does the lure splash into the lake? Round your answer to the nearest tenth.

3. Systems of Equations – The Tackle Shop

"I told you we'd need more bait," Trish said.

Chris shrugged. "I was optimistic."

They purchased worms costing $3 per container and minnows costing $5 per bucket. They bought a total of 12 containers and buckets for $48.

Question: How many containers of worms and buckets of minnows did they purchase?

4. Geometry – Walking Around the Lake

"This trail is beautiful," Chris said.

"And it's easier than carrying your tackle box," Trish joked.

A triangular fishing area has sides measuring 180 feet, 240 feet, and 300 feet.

Question: Show that the triangle is a right triangle, then determine its area.

5. Probability – The Big One

Chris proudly held up a largemouth bass.

Trish smiled. "Nice fish. Don't forget to tell everyone it was this big!"

The lake contains approximately 40% bass, 35% trout, and 25% perch. Chris catches one fish at random and immediately releases it before casting again.

The Daisy Bicycle

The first warm Saturday of spring drew dozens of volunteers to the annual park cleanup. Molly Kennedy and Rick Crowe slipped on bright orange work gloves, accepted a pair of litter grabbers, and joined the cheerful crowd collecting bottles, branches, and windblown trash along the walking trails. Birds chattered from budding maple trees while children laughed nearby, competing to see who could fill a trash bag first.

"This place already looks better," Molly said, tying off another full bag.

Rick nodded. "Amazing what a few helping hands can accomplish."

They wandered farther into a wooded section of the park where last autumn's leaves still carpeted the ground. A narrow footpath curved around a cluster of evergreens before disappearing behind a thicket of mountain laurel.

"Did you hear that?" Molly asked.

"Hear what?"

"I thought I heard...a bicycle bell."

Rick smiled. "Either that, or the squirrels have started riding bikes."

They laughed and followed the faint trail. Just beyond the brush, they stopped in surprise.

Leaning gently against an old oak tree stood a weathered bicycle unlike anything either of them had ever seen.

Every inch of the frame had been decorated with artificial white daisies.

The handlebars were wrapped with daisy garlands. Plastic blossoms circled the spokes. The basket overflowed with silk flowers, and even the seat was trimmed with tiny daisy petals that had somehow survived the winter snow.

"It's beautiful," Molly whispered.

"And completely out of place," Rick replied.

There wasn't a speck of rust on the decorations, only on the bicycle itself. The tires had long since gone flat, but the flowers still looked bright and cheerful, as though someone had lovingly arranged them only yesterday.

Rick looked around.

"No footprints. No picnic table. No campsite."

"Just...this."

Molly noticed a small brass bell hanging from the handlebars.

She rang it once.

Ring...ring.

The sound echoed softly through the quiet woods.

For a brief moment, a pair of bluebirds fluttered down from the branches overhead before darting away again.

Rick chuckled.

"Well, we found the park's prettiest piece of litter."

"I'm not so sure it's litter," Molly said thoughtfully. "It feels more like...someone's forgotten story."

Together they wheeled the daisy bicycle back toward the volunteer station. Everyone who saw it smiled.

No one knew who had left it there.

No one recognized it.

The park supervisor decided to display the bicycle near the visitor center with a small handwritten sign that read:

FOUND DURING SPRING CLEANUP. IF THIS DAISY BICYCLE BELONGS TO YOU, PLEASE CONTACT THE PARK OFFICE.

As Molly and Rick headed home that afternoon, they couldn't stop wondering about its mysterious owner.

Sometimes the most memorable discoveries aren't treasures hidden underground.

Sometimes they're waiting quietly beneath the trees, covered in daisies, just hoping someone will notice.

Trying to Cancel a Subscription Like It's a Spy Mission 😂🕵️

Have you ever tried to cancel a subscription? It feels less like managing your finances and more like accepting a top-secret mission. 😄

Signing up takes five seconds. Canceling takes longer than assembling a bookshelf without instructions. 📦

The website cheerfully says, "Managing your subscription is easy." Whenever I read that, I know trouble is coming. 😂

I click "Account." Then I click "Settings." Then I click "Preferences," and somehow I end up reading the privacy policy. 🤔

The cancel button is hidden so well that I expect it to have its own witness protection program. 🕶️

Every page has a giant "Upgrade Now" button. The "Cancel" button looks like it was printed with invisible ink. 🤣

Finally, I find the tiny link. I click it, and the website asks, "Are you sure?" 😄

Of course, I'm sure. I had to cross three digital mountain ranges to get here. 🏔️

Then comes the survey. Apparently, my subscription wants closure. 😂

It asks why I'm leaving. I want to answer, "Because I finally found the exit." 🚪

The company offers me ten percent off. Suddenly, this feels less like a cancellation and more like haggling at a flea market. 💰

I politely decline. They immediately offer 20% off, as though we were negotiating a peace treaty. 🤝

Then they remind me about all the wonderful features I never used. Thanks for mentioning them after a year of billing me. 😆

Next comes the password screen. I created that password sometime during the last ice age. 🧊

I click "Forgot Password." My email inbox suddenly has more activity than a family reunion. 📧

The verification code expires before I finish typing it. I think it was trained for the hundred-yard dash. 🏃

A chatbot appears and cheerfully asks how it can help. I already know this conversation is going sideways. 🤖

I type, "Cancel my subscription." The chatbot replies, "Would you like to upgrade?" 😂

Eventually, a real person joins the chat. I feel as though I have reached the final level of a video game. 🎮

The representative asks, "May I ask why you're leaving?" I answer, "Mostly because I enjoy impossible challenges." 😄

Then they place me on hold. Even the elevator music sounds judgmental. 🎵

While I wait, I begin wondering whether my subscription has diplomatic immunity. 🌎

At last, someone returns and says my account has been canceled. I don't celebrate yet because I've seen enough plot twists. 🎬

A confirmation email arrives one minute later. Another arrives asking whether I really meant to cancel. 📩

The following day, I received a message saying, "We already miss you." We were never that close. 😂

A week later, they invited me back with a fifty-percent discount. Apparently, absence really does make the marketing department grow fonder. 💸

I check my credit card statement with the concentration of a detective examining evidence. No charge appears, and I finally relax. 🕵️

I walk around the house announcing my victory. Nobody applauds because they have never attempted this mission themselves. 😄

I feel like I deserve a medal for exceptional bravery in the face of recurring billing. 🥇

The funny part is that next month I will probably sign up for another free trial. Secret agents never seem to learn. 😂👏
