 Miller's Mysteries Blog

  • Greetings and welcome to Miller’s Mysteries Blog on another unpredictable summer day where sunshine and clouds keep switching shifts every twenty minutes. The goats next door seem delighted by the confusion.

 Professor

The cats stare outside as if personally betrayed by the weather forecast. A light breeze carries the smell of wet pavement, fresh mulch, and someone burning breakfast toast nearby. Plans are already forming for shopping adventures, Calendar House entertainment, and maybe dinner somewhere with excellent mashed potatoes. AMC theaters are beginning to sound especially tempting on cool evenings like this. Summer in Connecticut may not be predictable, but it is rarely boring.

Southington News
Southington News Today: Cleanup continues after the powerful Fourth of July storms, with crews addressing downed trees and storm damage reported in parts of Southington and neighboring towns. Local sports fans can also look ahead, as the 2026 CIAC football schedule has been released, with Southington set for another exciting season that includes a key matchup against Glastonbury on October 23. Here's hoping for calmer skies and a great summer ahead for everyone in our community!

NASA News πŸ”: NASA continues preparing for the Artemis missions that will return astronauts to the Moon while advancing technologies needed for future human exploration of Mars. The James Webb Space Telescope is still delivering remarkable images and discoveries, helping scientists study distant galaxies, newborn stars, and the atmospheres of planets beyond our solar system. Every new mission and observation brings us another step closer to understanding our vast and fascinating universe.

Weekend Weather Forecast: Friday will be warm and humid, with scattered afternoon showers and the chance of a heavy thunderstorm, so keep an umbrella handy. Saturday turns more comfortable with partly sunny skies, while Sunday looks mostly sunny and pleasant—great weather for outdoor plans. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend, everyone!

Horoscope for July 9, 2026: Today the stars predict you'll finally find that thing you've been looking for—right after you buy a replacement. Avoid arguing with squirrels, GPS voices, or coffee makers, because they're all feeling unusually opinionated today. Your lucky numbers are 3, 9, and "just five more minutes."

Astronomy News πŸ”: This week, Earth is approaching aphelion, the point in its orbit where our planet is farthest from the Sun—more than 94.5 million miles away. Despite being farther from the Sun, it's summer in the Northern Hemisphere because the seasons are caused by Earth's tilt, not its distance from the Sun. Tonight, look toward the southeastern sky after dark, where the bright stars of the Summer Triangle will be climbing high overhead.

UFO News πŸ”
The Northeast angle is actually a strong one for my readers: recent government-released UAP files included reports from the region involving glowing orb-like objects, including a case describing two witnesses observing a bright red sphere with a white center in their backyard. Connecticut has also had renewed public attention around unexplained aerial reports and discussions about studying UAP sightings.

• The Reader
Sean leaned against a picnic table at the town park in late afternoon. His notebook was open flat beside him with pencil marks filling half the page. MindMyst Tales Blog glowed on his phone beneath the shade of an oak tree. He drank lemonade from a plastic bottle still cold from the cooler. A bag of kettle chips crackled in the breeze. Children’s voices drifted from the baseball field nearby. Still, he stayed focused on the screen.

• Math of the Week πŸ“πŸ“πŸ”’

1. The Fourth of July Fireworks Equation πŸŽ†

Trish and Chris bought fireworks for a neighborhood celebration. Trish bought 3 boxes of sparklers and 2 packs of bottle rockets for a total of $38. Chris bought 5 boxes of sparklers and 1 pack of bottle rockets for a total of $34.

However, after Chris accidentally lit a sparkler backward and chased himself around the yard like a confused comet, they decided to buy more.

Let s represent the cost of a box of sparklers and b represent the cost of a pack of bottle rockets.

Problem:
Find the cost of one box of sparklers and one pack of bottle rockets.

2. The Summer Lemonade Stand Profit Problem πŸ‹

Trish and Chris opened a lemonade stand during a hot July weekend. Trish insisted on adding "extra secret ingredients" (which turned out to be too much sugar), while Chris handled the money.

They sold lemonade for $2.50 per cup. Their supplies cost $45, and they sold 85 cups.

Problem:
a) How much money did they make in sales?
b) What was their profit?
c) If Chris drank 7 cups himself because "quality control is important," what would the profit have been if he had shown more self-control?

3. The Beach Trip Distance Problem πŸ–️

Trish and Chris drove to the beach for a July vacation. On the way there, Chris drove at an average speed of 55 mph. On the way home, Trish drove 10 mph faster because she wanted to get home before Chris finished singing every song on the radio.

The total round trip distance was 330 miles, and the total driving time was 6.5 hours.

Problem:
Find the distance traveled each way.

4. The Backyard Pool Volume Problem 🏊

Trish and Chris bought an inflatable backyard pool shaped like a cylinder. The pool has a radius of 6 feet and a height of 2 feet.

Unfortunately, Chris discovered that filling it required many trips with a garden hose, while Trish supervised from a lawn chair and offered "expert advice."

Use the formula:

V=Ο€r^2h

Problem:
a) Find the volume of the pool.
b) If the hose fills 5 cubic feet per minute, how many minutes will it take to fill the pool?

5. The July Ice Cream Truck Investigation 🍦

During a July heat wave, Trish and Chris tracked the ice cream truck's sales. The truck sold twice as many vanilla cones as chocolate cones. It sold 18 more vanilla cones than strawberry cones. Altogether, it sold 96 ice cream treats.

Let:

v = vanilla cones
c = chocolate cones
s = strawberry cones

Problem:
Determine how many of each flavor were sold.

Bonus question: If Chris ate one chocolate cone, two vanilla cones, and claimed the strawberry cone was "for research," how many treats were left?

Sustainable Living: Small Changes, Big Impact 🌎

Imagine a home that produces its own energy, uses resources wisely, and works in harmony with nature. Imagine a road trip where your journey leaves behind memories instead of a mountain of waste. Sustainable living is not just a trend—it is a smarter way to live, whether you are in a house, an apartment, an RV, or traveling the open road.

One of the most exciting steps toward sustainability is harnessing the power of the sun. Solar panels can transform sunlight into clean electricity, helping homeowners reduce energy costs and rely less on traditional power sources. Even smaller solar solutions, like portable chargers and solar-powered lights, can make a difference during camping trips and outdoor adventures.

Energy efficiency begins inside the home. LED lighting, smart thermostats, energy-efficient appliances, and proper insulation help reduce wasted energy while keeping living spaces comfortable. Every kilowatt saved is not only good for the environment—it can also be good for your wallet.

Water is one of our planet's most valuable resources, and smart water management is essential. Rain barrels can collect water for gardens, low-flow faucets can reduce usage, and fixing small leaks can prevent gallons of water from being wasted. A simple habit like turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth can make a surprising impact over time.

Sustainable living also means making thoughtful choices about what we buy and throw away. Reusable containers, recycling, composting, and choosing products with less packaging can help reduce the amount of waste heading to landfills. Small daily decisions add up to create a cleaner world.

For those who love adventure, sustainable living can travel with you. Eco-friendly RVs, electric vehicles, and hybrid cars are changing the way people explore the country. Travelers can reduce their environmental footprint by planning efficient routes, conserving water, and respecting the natural places they visit.

Gardening is another wonderful way to connect with sustainability. Growing vegetables, planting native flowers, and creating habitats for birds and pollinators can turn a backyard into a small ecosystem. Even a few plants on a balcony can provide fresh food and support local wildlife.

Technology is making sustainable living easier than ever. From home energy monitors that track electricity use to apps that help reduce food waste, innovation is giving people new tools to make environmentally responsible choices. The future of green living is not about giving things up—it is about finding better ways to do things.

The most powerful part of sustainable living is that everyone can participate. You don't need a huge solar array or a completely off-grid home to make a difference. Choosing one new eco-friendly habit today can inspire another tomorrow.

Whether at home or on the road, sustainable living is an adventure filled with possibilities. By embracing solar power, protecting our water, reducing waste, and respecting the natural world, we become caretakers of the planet we all share. The journey toward a greener future begins with a single step—and that step can start right where you are.

 • Now, This Week's Exciting Story

The Great Lobster Roll Debate

The first truly humid weekend of July arrived along the Connecticut shoreline with temperatures climbing, gulls arguing over stolen french fries, and every seafood restaurant from Mystic to Milford advertising what they claimed was "the greatest lobster roll in Connecticut."

Jackson Dark was suspicious.

Not of the lobster rolls. He loved lobster rolls.

He was suspicious of the word "greatest."

"Every restaurant says they have the best," Jackson said as he leaned against his forest-green 2016 Mustang GT, Midnight Dark, parked near the water. The afternoon sun reflected off the polished hood while the Mustang's engine clicked softly as it cooled from the drive.

Emily Harper looked over her notebook. "So your plan is to investigate lobster rolls?"

"Exactly," Jackson replied.

"That's not exactly a normal detective case."

Jackson smiled. "Emily, we've investigated strange maps, mysterious lights, and impossible clues. Why shouldn't we solve the greatest seafood mystery in Connecticut?"

Emily laughed. "Because this one might require eating seven lobster rolls."

Jackson handed her a pen.

"Seven?"

"Seven."

She shook her head. "You're serious."

"Very serious."

And that was how the Great Lobster Roll Investigation began.

Their first stop was a small seaside restaurant where the lobster roll arrived overflowing with fresh lobster meat. Jackson carefully examined the sandwich like a detective studying evidence.

"Observation?" Emily asked.

"Excellent lobster. Toasted bun. Generous portion."

"Verdict?"

Jackson took another bite.

"Further investigation required."

Emily rolled her eyes. "Convenient."

The second restaurant offered a hot buttered lobster roll. The third offered the classic cold version with mayonnaise and a sprinkle of seasoning. By the fourth stop, Jackson and Emily had developed a complicated scoring system.

Lobster quality: 10 points.

Bun perfection: 10 points.

Butter management: 10 points.

Overall happiness: impossible to measure.

"You're giving points for butter?" Emily asked.

"Of course."

"Why?"

"Because butter is the official language of summer."

By late afternoon, Midnight Dark had carried them along some of the most beautiful roads in Connecticut. The Mustang's V8 rumble echoed along the shoreline as they traveled from one seafood destination to another.

But at their seventh and final restaurant, something strange happened.

The restaurant owner placed two lobster rolls on the table.

One was beautiful—perfectly arranged, overflowing with lobster, and served with a side of fries.

The other was covered with a small silver tray.

"That one isn't on the menu," the owner said.

Jackson and Emily exchanged a glance.

"Why not?"

The owner looked around nervously.

"Because it was supposed to be judged by Walter Butterfield."

Emily immediately recognized the name.

Walter Butterfield was Connecticut's most famous food critic. His reviews could make a restaurant famous overnight—or send chefs back to the kitchen to rethink everything they knew about cooking.

"And where is he?" Jackson asked.

The owner sighed.

"Missing."

Jackson slowly reached for his detective notebook.

Emily smiled.

"Of course you did."

"What?"

"You found a mystery involving lobster rolls. You couldn't possibly just eat lunch."

Under the silver tray was a handwritten note.

"The greatest lobster roll cannot be found by taste alone. Follow the trail of butter."

Jackson held up the note.

"A clue."

Emily looked toward the parking lot.

"Please tell me the Mustang isn't getting involved."

Five minutes later, Midnight Dark was cruising down the shoreline again.

"The butter trail led here," Emily said, pointing toward a small seafood shack near the marina.

Behind the building they found empty butter containers, lobster shells, and a trail of napkins blowing in the breeze.

Then they heard a voice.

"Finally! Someone found me!"

Sitting behind the shack was Walter Butterfield, holding a lobster roll and looking completely comfortable.

"You disappeared?" Jackson asked.

Walter shrugged.

"I needed to conduct the ultimate taste test without restaurant owners trying to impress me."

Emily crossed her arms.

"So you hid?"

"I prefer the term undercover research."

Jackson looked at the seven empty lobster roll containers stacked nearby.

"You ate all those?"

Walter nodded proudly.

"I had to be certain."

Emily looked at Jackson.

"Seven lobster rolls?"

Jackson smiled.

"See? My research method was completely reasonable."

Walter laughed.

"I've learned something important. There is no single greatest lobster roll."

"No winner?" Emily asked.

"Oh, there are many winners," Walter explained. "Some people want hot lobster with melted butter. Some want cold lobster with mayonnaise. Some want the biggest portion possible. The best lobster roll is the one that makes you stop talking for a moment because you're too busy enjoying it."

Jackson nodded.

"That's actually a pretty good answer."

Walter handed him the final lobster roll.

"But I do have one final question."

"What?"

"Can Midnight Dark make it to one more seafood restaurant?"

Jackson looked at the Mustang sitting under the summer sky.

The answer was obvious.

"She can."

And so the Great Lobster Roll Debate continued.

Because along the Connecticut shoreline, mysteries could hide anywhere.

Sometimes behind an old lighthouse.

Sometimes inside a forgotten notebook.

And sometimes...

inside a perfectly toasted bun filled with lobster, butter, and a little bit of summer magic.

The next mystery would have to wait.

First, Jackson and Emily had one more lobster roll to investigate.

Comedy Club 🎀πŸͺ‘

Good evening, everybody! Tonight I want to talk about the most misunderstood residents of your home: leftovers. They live in your refrigerator, they wait patiently, and they have absolutely no idea if they are dinner or science experiments.

Every leftover has a dream. The dream is simple: to be remembered. A slice of pizza does not want to spend three weeks behind a jar of pickles wondering if anyone still cares.

The refrigerator is basically a tiny apartment building. The milk lives on the top floor, the vegetables have the quiet corner, and the leftovers are stuck in the basement with no idea what day it is.

The leftover container is the refrigerator version of a hotel room. Somebody checks in after dinner and says, "I will definitely be back tomorrow." Three weeks later, housekeeping is asking questions.

Leftovers are very optimistic. They always believe they are getting a second chance. Nobody has the heart to tell the macaroni and cheese that it has been promoted to permanent decoration.

Pizza is the king of leftovers. Pizza wakes up the next day with confidence. It knows it is still wanted. It sits there saying, "I am not old. I am vintage."

Chinese food leftovers have a completely different personality. They do not age. They just become more mysterious. You open the container and think, "Was this chicken? Was this noodles? Is this a treasure map?"

The refrigerator light is like a spotlight. Every time you open the door, the leftovers feel like they are on stage. They freeze and pretend they were not just sitting there watching you walk away.

The green beans in the back corner are the most nervous leftovers. They know their future is uncertain. They have been there so long they are starting to grow their own retirement plan.

Leftovers also know when you are hungry. They can sense it. You open the refrigerator at midnight and every container is thinking, "Pick me! I was delicious once!"

The leftover turkey after Thanksgiving has a complicated emotional journey. On day one, it is a celebrity. On day five, it is wondering why nobody wants to talk about stuffing anymore.

The mashed potatoes are always hopeful. They believe they can become something new. Add cheese, add spices, and suddenly they are saying, "I have reinvented myself."

The refrigerator door is like a job interview. You open it and stare at everything. The leftovers are thinking, "Please choose me. I have experience and I come with my own gravy."

The mystery container is the most intimidating one. Nobody knows what is inside. Nobody remembers putting it there. It is the refrigerator version of a locked treasure chest.

Every family has one person who says, "Don't throw that away. I'll eat it." That person is usually the same person who discovers it three months later and asks, "What is this?"

Leftovers also have rivalries. The pizza thinks it is better than the casserole. The casserole thinks it is more sophisticated. The salad is just trying to stay fresh long enough to be noticed.

The refrigerator shelf is a battlefield. Containers compete for space like they are fighting for a championship. The tall bottles are always blocking the short containers from seeing the light.

The leftovers have conversations when nobody is around. The soup says, "I used to be served in a nice bowl." The chicken says, "I used to have a whole family."

The refrigerator freezer is where leftovers go to disappear forever. Things in there are not stored. They are placed into a time capsule.

Every freezer has a bag of something nobody recognizes. It might be vegetables. It might be a meal. It might be something from a different decade.

Leftovers teach us patience. They sit quietly waiting for someone to appreciate them. They never complain, except maybe when they start making their own weather.

The refrigerator door is also a memory museum. You open it and suddenly remember that birthday dinner, that holiday meal, or that night you cooked something and promised yourself you would make it again.

The funny thing about leftovers is that we make too much food on purpose. We say, "I will make extra so I have lunch tomorrow." Tomorrow arrives and we say, "Who made all this food?"

Leftovers are the only food that can make you feel guilty. You look at a container and think, "You deserve better." The container is thinking, "Then stop ignoring me."

Some leftovers are heroes. They rescue you on a busy day when you have no time to cook. They are ready when you need them, like a delicious little emergency team.

Other leftovers are villains. They hide behind other food and wait until you discover them. Then they make you question every decision you made in the kitchen.

The refrigerator is a place of hope. Every container inside represents a future meal. Of course, some of those futures are more realistic than others.

The best leftovers are the ones that surprise you. You open the container expecting something ordinary and discover that yesterday's dinner is even better today.

Leftovers are proof that food has a second act. A meal does not always end when dinner is over. Sometimes it gets a sequel.

So tonight, when you open your refrigerator, remember that you are not just looking for food. You are visiting a community of tiny containers waiting for their big moment.

Treat your leftovers with respect. They have been waiting patiently, holding onto their flavor, and hoping you remember their names.

And if you find a container in the back that you do not recognize, do not panic. Just open it carefully, smile politely, and say, "Welcome back, mystery dinner."

Thank you, everybody. May your refrigerators be organized, your leftovers be delicious, and may you always know the difference between dinner and a science project.

A glowing oval craft landed in an open field outside Southington before dawn, flattening the grass beneath it in perfect circles. The hatch opened slowly. Six towering beings with translucent skin emerged, carrying strange instruments that hummed like swarms of bees. Wherever the sound passed, birds dropped from the sky.
