 Miller's Mysteries Blog

  • Greetings

Greetings and welcome to Miller's Mysteries Blog, where every July sunrise seems to arrive wearing its best smile. Southington is enjoying comfortable summer weather that practically begs for a scenic drive. The neighbor's goats stopped by the fence to make sure nothing exciting was happening without them.

The cats remained glued to the windows, convinced they were guarding the kingdom. We are looking forward to browsing shops and adding a few cheerful decorations around the house. It is amazing how one season can inspire so many adventures.

UFO News πŸ›Έ
Connecticut is still in the UFO conversation: Earlier this year, Connecticut lawmakers proposed having UConn study UFO/UAP reports. The proposal specifically focused on investigating sightings rather than assuming an extraterrestrial explanation.

And here's a fun one for tonight: the ISS is expected to make a visible pass over Connecticut around 7:45 p.m. A bright, steady light crossing the sky can look pretty mysterious if you don't know what you're seeing.

My UFO-watcher's rule: keep looking up, but don't label the object until we've eliminated the mundane explanations. That's where the really interesting cases begin. πŸ‘½πŸ”

  • The Reader

Megan Griswold sat on a weathered bench overlooking the beach early in the morning with a travel mug of coffee. A small notebook and pencil rested inside her canvas bag. Gentle waves rolled ashore as she opened the MindMyst Tales Blog on her phone. She enjoyed the wildlife article while nibbling on a blueberry muffin. Seagulls called overhead and a cool breeze carried the scent of salt air. She filled an entire page with thoughts inspired by the morning's reading. The beach seemed even more peaceful afterward.

 • Now, This Week's Exciting Story

The Camping Catastrophe

Jackson knew the camping trip was going to be great the moment he threw the last bag into the car. Unfortunately, he had no idea what was actually in the bags. Emily stood beside the campsite with the packing list in her hand, looking at Jackson, then at the pile of equipment. “Jackson,” she said, “where’s the tent?”

Jackson froze. “I thought you brought it.”

Emily stared at him. “I brought the food.”

They searched the car and discovered that the tent was definitely not there. Neither were the sleeping bags, lantern, camp chairs, or folding table. Jackson had remembered the cooler, three flashlights, a fishing pole, and approximately seventeen packages of paper napkins. The forecast called for temperatures near ninety-five degrees, with almost no breeze.

They decided to improvise. Jackson found a large tarp in the trunk and tied it between two trees. It wasn't exactly a tent, but it provided shade. Emily spread a blanket underneath it, and for a few minutes they convinced themselves they had created an innovative new camping shelter. Then the tarp sagged in the middle and dumped a small pile of leaves directly onto Jackson's head.

By noon, the heat had become brutal. The air seemed to shimmer above the campground, and even the squirrels appeared to have given up on life. Jackson tried to start a campfire for lunch, but after five minutes he was sweating so badly that Emily suggested they abandon the idea. “We need food that doesn't require turning the campground into a furnace,” she said.

Emily opened the cooler with a triumphant smile. She had packed everything needed for chili dogs. Hot dogs, buns, chili, cheese, onions, and condiments appeared one after another. Jackson looked at her as though she had just performed a magic trick. “You remembered the food?” he asked. Emily nodded. “Unlike somebody I know.”

They ate their chili dogs beneath the sagging tarp while trying not to drip chili onto the blanket. It was messy, hot, and completely ridiculous, but somehow it became the best part of the afternoon. Jackson declared that the camping trip was no longer a disaster. Emily reminded him that they still didn't have a tent.

That evening, the temperature finally began to drop. Emily produced another surprise from the food cooler: graham crackers, chocolate bars, and marshmallows. “S'mores,” she announced. Jackson stared at her. “You packed s'mores ingredients but forgot the tent?” Emily shrugged. “Priorities.”

They built a tiny cooking fire and carefully toasted the marshmallows. Jackson's first marshmallow caught fire and turned into a flaming comet. His second fell directly into the dirt. His third came out perfectly golden, and he proudly assembled the largest s'more anyone at the campground had ever seen.

Just as they settled beneath their improvised tarp, a gust of wind swept through the campsite. The tarp lifted like a giant sail, the blanket flew across the grass, and Jackson chased both while Emily rescued the remaining s'more ingredients. Ten minutes later they were sitting on the ground laughing so hard they could barely breathe.

By morning, they agreed that the trip had been a complete success, although neither could explain why. They had forgotten half the equipment, survived a heat wave, lost a tarp, destroyed several marshmallows, and eaten chili dogs under a makeshift shelter. Jackson looked at Emily and grinned. “Next time, I'll make the packing list.” Emily smiled. “Good. I'll pack the s'mores.”

Comedy Club 🎀πŸͺ‘πŸ€ͺ🎭

Have you ever bought furniture that says, “Easy assembly”? That phrase should be regulated by the Federal Trade Commission. If I see “Easy assembly” on a box, I immediately know I’m about to lose an entire Saturday.

The instructions are usually sitting right on top of everything. A nice little booklet with twelve languages, fifty-seven diagrams, and one warning that says, “Do not use power tools.” Naturally, I throw the booklet in the recycling bin.

I don't need instructions. I have assembled things my entire life. I once put together a bicycle when I was twelve. Of course, that bicycle had three wheels, but still.

Furniture assembly starts with confidence. You open the box and look at all the pieces. “I got this.” You say it with the same confidence a surgeon has before operating.

Then you spread everything across the floor. There are wooden panels, metal brackets, tiny screws, mysterious plastic pieces, and one component that looks like it belongs to a completely different piece of furniture.

You pick up a screw and think, “I know where this goes.” You don't know where it goes. But you have confidence, and confidence is apparently the official replacement for instructions.

The first step is always obvious. You attach two boards together. Easy. You grab a screwdriver and start turning. Five minutes later, you're holding two boards at a ninety-degree angle and wondering why the manufacturer hates you.

That's when you discover the little wooden dowels. Nobody knows what wooden dowels are for. They look like miniature hot dogs made from furniture.

You find four holes and four dowels. Perfect! You push them in. Then you discover there were supposed to be eight holes.

Now you're staring at the remaining dowels like they're witnesses in a courtroom. “Where did you come from?”

Eventually, you reach the point where you realize you have assembled something. You don't know what it is, but it's definitely furniture-related.

You stand back and admire it. “Pretty good.” That's when you notice the shelf is upside down.

You think, “Nobody will notice.” Then you realize everybody will notice because the shelf is now pointing toward the ceiling like it's trying to receive satellite television.

You take it apart. This is where furniture assembly gets serious. Taking something apart is much harder than putting it together because now you have to remember what you did.

You remove one screw, and three pieces fall onto the floor. You remove another screw, and suddenly the entire project has returned to the original pile.

At this point, you finally look at the instructions. You find them under a pizza box.

The first picture shows a tiny arrow pointing toward a tiny hole. You stare at it. “Ohhhhh.” That is the most expensive word in furniture assembly.

Apparently, you were supposed to attach Part B to Part C before Part D. You attached Part D to Part A before breakfast.

Now you have to undo everything. That's when you discover that the screwdriver has become emotionally involved in the project.

The screws don't want to come out. They have established residency. You turn the screwdriver left, right, left again. Nothing happens.

You start talking to the furniture. “Come on. Work with me.” The furniture remains silent, which is probably for the best.

Then you find the Allen wrench. Every piece of modern furniture comes with an Allen wrench. It's always about three inches long and shaped like a question mark.

You spend twenty minutes using it to tighten one screw by approximately one-sixteenth of a turn. Eventually, your hand develops a new muscle.

Then comes the final stage. You have one screw left.

That's never good. If you have one screw left, you either made a mistake or the manufacturer has generously provided you with a spare. You have no idea which one it is.

You look around the room. There are also two wooden dowels left. Now you're sweating.

You decide they're extras. Furniture manufacturers probably include extras for people who lose things. That's your story, and you're sticking with it.

You finally stand the furniture upright. It wobbles. You push it against the wall. Suddenly it's perfectly stable. Congratulations. You have invented structural engineering.

Then someone asks, “Did you read the instructions?”

You look at the finished furniture, the pile of mysterious parts, the screwdriver, and the Allen wrench. “Of course I did.” That's the biggest lie you've told all day.

The real adventure begins when you realize you have assembled the furniture backward. But by then, you've invested four hours, developed a relationship with the bookshelf, and named it Steve.

So now Steve stays exactly where he is. Nobody touches Steve. Nobody moves Steve. And if anybody asks why there are three extra screws on the floor, we don't know each other.

===========SHADOW
A glowing spacecraft crashes into a Connecticut lake without disturbing the surface of the water. Divers investigating the strange object discover that it is much larger beneath the surface than it appears above it. The hull suddenly opens, releasing dozens of pale creatures into the lake. The aliens have long, transparent bodies and enormous hands with webbed fingers. They move through the water faster than any submarine. Divers watch as the creatures gather around something buried beneath the lakebed. The object appears to be another spacecraft. Suddenly, its engines activate. The entire lake begins boiling. Then something gigantic rises from the depths.
